What Does AEG Mean in Airsoft?
The History of Airsoft
Airsoft first began in Japan around the 1970s. Its initial purpose was to provide a safe, realistic, and affordable environment for military and police training exercises. Since then, its popularity has grown exponentially, gathering millions of players, where utilization in both recreational, military training, and competitive aspects continue to grow.
The Term AEG
AEG stands for 'Automatic Electric Gun', which is the most common form of airsoft weaponry. It is powered by an electric motor and gearbox, which powers the compression and shooting of BBs. AEGs are the most popular type of airsoft guns due to their relatively low cost and ease of firing.
The evolution of AEGs has gone through many incremental changes over time, starting from basic spring-powered models to now the high-end AEGs with metal bodies, strengthened internals and even the option to add compatible accessories such as scopes, grips and lasers.
The Different Types of AEGs
An AEG much like real firearms is classified into three main types:
- Pistols
- Assault Rifles
- Machine Guns
Pistols are the smallest and most common airsoft guns, are easily concealable, and are not as loud due to shorter barrel length. Assault rifles are slightly larger and provide better firepower over longer distances. Machine guns are the largest of the AEGs and provide a powerful airsoft shooting experience with a larger magazine capacity.
Features to Look for
When shopping for an AEG, here are some key features to look out for that indicate a better or worse overall experience:
- Material: AEGs come with materials ranging from plastic to metal. Metal AEGs usually tend to have improved accuracy, better reliability and are more robust. On the other hand, plastic AEGs are lightweight and less pricey and can still offer an excellent experience when upgraded.
- FPS: The muzzle velocity of an AEG determines its FPS or Feet per Second'. The higher the FPS, the better the range of the AEG.
- Inner barrel: The inner barrel has a direct effect on accuracy, so it's important to take into account its length and diameter. The shorter and thicker the inner barrel, the more accurate the shots.
- Upgradability: There are many different upgrades available to increase the performance and durability of electric guns. AEGs can be upgraded with parts such as gears, compressors, springs, barrel, and hop-up units.
Insights
AEGs are the preferred armament of choice for most airsoft players as they offer performance and competitiveness in an affordable package. It is important to carefully assess the features and the quality of the AEG in order to ensure long-term hours of fun. Ultimately, the combination of a good gun with quality ammo and eye protection can certainly add to the experience of airsoft as a popular recreational activity.
So whether it's just for plinking in the backyard, or taking part in competitive events, the AEG can provide the airsoft player of any level with a unique and enjoyable experience.
